Advertisement -Word Origin & History
Advertisement mid-15c., “written statement calling attention to” something, “public notice” (of anything, but often of a sale); from Fr. avertissement, from stem of avertir (see advertise). Meaning “public notice” (usually paid), the main modern sense, emerged 1580s and was fully developed by 18c.
I am sure Advertisement has been going on as long as humans have been trading.
Here is a bit of trivia about advertisement. The origin of the red, white and blue barber pole is associated with the service of bloodletting and was historically a representation of bloody bandages wrapped around a pole. During medieval times, barbers performed surgery on customers, as well as tooth extractions. This was one of the first origins of advertisement.
Wiki Fact:
[At the Council of Tours in 1163, the clergy was banned from the practice of surgery. From then, physicians were clearly separated from the surgeons and barbers. Later, the role of the barbers was defined by the College de Saint-Côme et Saint-Damien, established by Jean Pitard in Paris circa 1210, as academic surgeons of the long robe and barber surgeons of the short robe.
After the formation of the United Barber Surgeon’s Company in England, a statute required the barber to use a blue and white pole and the surgeon to use a red and white pole for advertisement. In France, surgeons used a red pole with a basin attached to identify their offices.] That red and blue pole is still used today as advertisement.
Fast Forward to Advertisement in the 21st Century
With the Internet, advertisement seems as simple as a website, or running an ad on Craig’s list. Maybe direct mailer via coupons?
Well it is, sorta. Due to the advent of the Internet, many do turn to their handheld device to find your brand or service. However, not only are the serious and professional on the net, but so too are the novice and scams.
So what is a business owner to do so that a potential client knows they are indeed working with a professional? Part of the challenge with advertisement on the Net is being seen. Your traffic is not driving by where you are the only one with a red, white pole. Instead there are 8,000,000+ shops competing for the first page on a search engine for a keyword. Like this articles keyword is advertisement. So when a person types in advertisement, this article may come up. Putting me on the ‘radar’ sorta speak. Perhaps that is how you found me. Looking for help with advertising your business?
Rising Above so your Advertisement is Noticed
A Keyword is the word One uses to associate an article or website with that keyword; which is used by search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.
IGE: If you launch a browser and type in the keyword ‘website commercial’, or ‘website commercials’, see if you can find Netcommercial.Net. My website should be on the first page for that keyword. That is a form of advertisement strategy that I use. This Blog uses many keywords associated with advertising a business or website that drives traffic to my website. I then share what I have learned in last 25-30 years in hopes of a business owner using my experience and finding success in their own advertisement campaigns. Recognizing that I am a hub of information. In turn they come to me for any motion graphic advertisement campaign they may need.
Advertisement Strategy
Any form of structure needs a strategy. Structure in this case is a business. Strategy is how to drive traffic to your website and to then have them be converted, from a looker to an order.
What kind of strategy do you have on your webpage? Did you just emulate the last website, or have a webmaster put up what they thought was ‘consensus website advertisement’? Where there is a banner at the top of your burst page with an exciting headline and maybe a graphic streamer to tie it all together? If so fine, it may be what is in order for your type of business. However, how are you going to broadcast your website as you advertise it? Post a link on Craig’s, maybe post it onto your social media page? That could work, however you are the consumer too. On that note; do you click thru every link posted? Does the Headline of an advertisement influence whether or not you click thru? Once they do click through what kind of website presence are you portraying? Remember perception is very important. This is how people will recall and ‘frame you.’
Broadcasting your Advertisement
Now that you have a structured website to represent your professional business it’s time to advertise it. Here are a couple of options: Craig’s list, keywords, or using social media to advertise your brand or service. However, just because you’ve placed a link does not mean someone will click thru so that you are on their radar. We need to broadcast it with effective click through that will result into conversions.
Ahh… but how? This question that has been going on since humans have been trading goods and services.
I feel that if I would check out an advertisement, someone else might too. I’ve felt the same way that most new business owners do or did, when they too launched their website. To come up on a search, they needed to be typing in their website name instead of what they represent! Keyword Advertisement.
Now what? How do I get my page found? What I found, after much reading and experimenting is that to have a successful campaign, you must give, before they will respond. Hence this Blog. I give free sales and advertising help. I help businesses communicate with their customers. When I make an advertisement, I make it short and entertaining, all while promoting the brand and message.
How could NetCommercial help you? Simply click on here; send me a link to your website and I will in-turn give you an advertising campaign quote that you can share via social media, Craig’s and other websites. People respond to video, especially if it’s a place holder with an interesting graphic. Your advertisement message can be that of narration, news, or notification if so desired.
Hopefully, what you’ve pulled out of this article is that to advertise is not just sale, sale, sale. Rather it is about giving and becoming a source of information, along with tastefully promoting your brand. Via Keywords, while sharing useful information.
